My world majors

The birthday bash (continued)

It was the ultimate birthday gift. Everyone had chipped in. I was surprised – and totally stoked. Apparently in passing I had mentioned that, after running in about 8 or so other marathons around Europe, New York would be a big dream of mine. My wife had listened closely, and here I was now.

New York. The. World’s. Marathon.

I didn’t know it at the time. But that night and New York marked the start of my World Major Marathon dream – and journey around the world.

New York, Nov. 2015

Ignoring all recommendations, like many other runners I let myself be ignited by the amazing atmosphere and went out guns blazing. I started the first well on par to finish sub 3:40. But eventually – and earlier than I would have hoped – the wheels started coming off, and I was really hurting. As I moving closer to Central Park, my wife joined me on the course and ran with me, and eventually we also finished the race together (the finish line photo shows us both). It was a very tough race for me, but the first World Major was in the books. I loved the fact that New Yorkers on the street congratulate runners as they hobble down the sidewalk.

My rating: 5.5 Majors Stars

Berlin, 2018

The World Major in Berlin is the most scenic (many historic sights along the way) - and arguably the fastest course on the globe. I ran Berlin in September 2018, earning my second Majors star.

Chicago
2018

"Sweet home, Chicago" blasting through the speakers at the start line. A crazy race through warm rain and wind, weaving through Chicago skyscrapers and vibrant neighborhoods. I loved every minute of the Chicago Marathon 2018.

Boston
2019

Boston is the mecca of marathon running. A place of countless race stories and legends. The best amateur marathoners in the world toe the line in Hopkinton. It was surreal to be part of this. Even if it turned out to be my darkest day in running so far.

London
2022

My London Marathon adventure was four years (!) in the making. After injuries, Covid related postponement and illness, Oct. 2, 2022 was the day. Finally.
